Many times, post-game recovery is overlooked as a pitcher is tired and wants to just rest. This is the exact opposite of what Spades pitching lessons in Naperville teaches. Looking at some of the legends of the game, Nolan Ryan, Randy Johnson, Pedro Martinez, Tom Glavine, John Smoltz and countless others preach how important post game recovery work was to the longevity of their careers and overall health. Simply stated, you skip your post game work, you’re putting yourself in a dangerous position from an arm health standpoint.

What Spades Pitching lessons in Naperville preaches is that within 3 hours of throwing, even a single pitch, you must get 30 minutes of an aerobic activity in. This can be running, skipping rope, power walking, exercise bike (Nolan Ryan’s go to) or the best thing which is swimming. Fun fact about Nolan Ryan, is that he would literally get pulled from the game and go into the club house and pull his fan bike out and get his 30 minutes in immediately. The longer you put it off, the more the “dread” builds up in the mind. Take immediate action post game, don’t let the mind overthink what needs to be done.

What this aerobic activity accomplishes is to push the old blood through the system and help to bring blood to the muscles that were just put through a heavy workload. By bringing blood to the muscles that were used, the healing process can begin. The quicker the healing process can start, the quicker we can recover overall. This leads to the decreased soreness and stiffness in the body in the days following the outing.

Another thing that Spades pitching lessons in Naperville teaches is no ice post throwing. Ice stops the healing process. We just did all the work to push the old blood through our system and bring the blood to the muscles that need the healing to start. We put it on ice and we counteract all the work we just did. No ice unless it’s for your water post game that is.

As you climb the ranks higher and higher, your availability as a pitcher is your lifeline. If you are sore, stiff, or can’t go when your number is called, then Coach will simply find someone who is. Eventually, you lose your spot and that becomes that.

30 minutes of aerobic activity, within 3 hours of pitching, non-negotiable.
